Chora Sfakion - Aradena

Chora Sfakion - Aradena,
West Crete

03-05-2026

The ~15-kilometer ascent from Chora Sfakion to Aradena is the definition of dramatic Cretan scenery. This route takes you from the edge of the Libyan Sea to the dizzying heights of the White Mountains, passing through legendary villages and ending at one of Europe’s most impressive gorges.

1. The 27 Hairpins of Anopolis
The journey begins immediately after Chora Sfakion with a legendary series of continuous switchbacks. These 27 tight hairpin bends climb the mountain face rapidly, offering bird’s-eye views of the Sfakian harbor and the distant village of Loutro. The asphalt is good, but intense concentration is required due to the steep gradient and the sheer drop-offs on the side of the road.

2. The Anopolis Plateau
After conquering the climb, the landscape opens up into the historic Anopolis Plateau. Here, the air turns crisp and the scenery becomes rugged and authentic. The village of Anopolis, the birthplace of the revolutionary hero Daskalogiannis, is the perfect spot to stop for a traditional "Sfakianopita" (cheese pie with honey) under the ancient plane trees in the village square.

3. The Aradena Bridge
Continuing west, the road leads to the breathtaking Aradena Gorge. The landmark here is the metal, wood-planked Bailey bridge that spans the chasm at a height of 138 meters. It is the highest bungee jumping site in Greece and one of the highest in Europe. Crossing the bridge—whether on wheels or on foot—is a spine-tingling experience as the wooden planks rattle beneath you.

4. The Ghost Village
On the far side of the bridge lies the old village of Aradena. Now largely abandoned following a historic vendetta, its stone houses stand as silent witnesses to the past. The Byzantine church of Taxiarches Michael, perched on the edge of the cliff, is one of the oldest and most well-preserved monuments in the region, offering a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.

Whispers of the Gorge: Local Secrets
The Vardinogiannis Bridge: This impressive structure was a gift from the Vardinogiannis family, who hail from the area, finally connecting the isolated village of Aradena to the rest of the island in 1986.
The "Skala" Path: Before the bridge was built, locals used the "Aradena Staircase," a stone-built zigzag path that descends to the bottom of the gorge and climbs back up the other side.
The White Mountains Gate: Beyond Aradena, the road continues toward "Amoutsera," acting as the high-altitude gateway for those looking to reach the heart of the "High Desert" of the White Mountains.

Rider’s Notes
Road Width: Standard mountain asphalt, though the hairpin sections can feel narrow. Watch out for tour buses or local 4x4s taking wide lines in the corners.
Surface: Fully paved. The asphalt is generally in good condition, though the wooden deck of the bridge itself requires slow speeds and caution, especially for motorcycles.
Caution: Expect to find goats standing in the middle of the road or perched on the cliffs above—they are the true "owners" of Sfakia.
