Prasies - Roustica,
Central Crete

31-05-2026

The ~32-kilometer journey from Prasies to Roustika is a beautiful inland drive through the lush, rolling countryside just south of Rethymno, connecting historic foothills, traditional villages, and fertile valleys.

1. The Ancient Gateway (Prasies to Chromonastiri)
The route kicks off in Prasies, a historic village whose roots stretch back to antiquity and ancient Prasos. Unlike its aristocratic neighbors, Prasies has always been a deep-rooted agricultural hub, once famous for its watermills and fertile land. From here, you wind up into the foothills toward Chromonastiri, an architectural gem renowned for its beautifully preserved Venetian buildings and the grand 17th-century Villa Clodio.

2. Through the Traditional Foothills (Roussospiti to Armeni)
Heading west, the road loops through the picturesque village of Roussospiti before dropping south toward the valley floor. This segment offers a beautifully fluid drive through deeply shaded, tree-lined corridors and olive groves, eventually crossing the main north-south road near the oak forests of Armeni.

3. The Rural Heartland to Roustika
After crossing the valley, the B-road climbs gently into the western interior hills, passing through a string of traditional, quiet settlements including Agios Andreas and Kaloniktis. The route concludes as you roll into Roustika, a remarkably well-preserved village nestled at 290 meters, famous for its Venetian-era architecture and the historic, fortress-like Monastery of Prophet Elias.

Whispers of the Hills: Local Secrets
The Sima Bridge: Located near the start of your journey by Prasies, this historic stone bridge highlights the deep-rooted, centuries-old transport networks of the area.
The Military Museum: While passing through Chromonastiri, you can spot Villa Clodio, which now houses an impressive collection of historical artifacts and uniforms.
The Late Minoan Cemetery: Just outside Armeni lies a fascinating, oak-forested archaeological site containing over 200 ancient chamber tombs carved directly into the bedrock.

Rider’s Notes
Road Width: Standard provincial B-road with a great natural rhythm, though it narrows down significantly to a single lane when passing through the tight centers of old villages.
Surface:From the start up to Chromonastiri, the unpaved road is easy, with the exception of a couple of spots that need caution. After that, fully paved asphalt with fair grip throughout till the destination. Watch out for agricultural debris or fallen leaves in the more heavily forested segments.
Caution: Expect typical rural surprises around blind corners, from slow-moving local tractors to sheep crossing the asphalt.
