Lera Cave
Situated on the slopes of Mount Vardies on the Akrotiri peninsula, east of the coastal village of Stavros, Lera Cave is a historic natural cavern steeped in local legend and ancient history.

History & Naming:
The cave gets its modern name from the local chieftain Stephanos Leras, who used the cavern as a strategic hideout and base of operations during the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule in 1821. Beyond its revolutionary past, archaeological excavations have revealed that the cave was used as a place of worship dedicated to the Pan and the Nymphs from the Neolithic period down to the Hellenistic and Roman eras.

The Environment & Layout:
The cavern features a prominent entrance overlooking the bay of Stavros and consists of multiple chambers adorned with natural stalactite and stalagmite formations, carve-outs, and small rock basins that collected water. Its high position offers stunning panoramic views over the northern coastline of Akrotiri and the Aegean Sea.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Located near Stavros village on the Akrotiri peninsula. Reached via asphalt road to the base of Mount Vardies near the lagoon/beach area, followed by a steep, rocky hiking trail ascending the hillside up to the cave entrance. Good footwear and a flashlight are recommended for exploring the interior.
