Aradena Bridge
Spanning the breathtaking, sheer depths of the Aradena Gorge in the wild Sfakia region of western Crete, the Aradena Bridge is a striking feat of engineering and a thrilling landmark for travelers exploring the White Mountains.

History & Engineering:
Constructed in 1987, this single-lane Bailey-type steel bridge was commissioned by the Vardinogiannis family to connect the abandoned village of Aradena with the rest of Sfakia and facilitate local livestock farming and access. Suspended an astonishing 138 meters above the rocky bed of the gorge, it holds the title of the highest bridge of its type in Greece and one of the highest suspension/truss bridges in Europe.

Atmosphere & Adventure:
Crossing the bridge—whether on foot or by vehicle—offers a heart-pounding experience. The deck consists of wooden planks that rattle slightly under tires, revealing direct, vertigo-inducing views straight down into the deep, echoing canyon below. For adrenaline seekers, the bridge is also one of the premier bungee jumping spots in Europe.

The Access: Reached via the paved dead-end road that winds south past Anopolis through the rugged mountain landscape of Sfakia. There is parking right at the edge of the bridge near the abandoned village of Aradena, serving as the starting point for hikers descending into the gorge or exploring the old stone trails.
