Prasses Koules
Perched on an elevated hilltop just past the village of Prasses, this ruined Ottoman fortification (koules) commands a sweeping position over the surrounding valleys and mountain passes south of Rethymno.

Strategic History:
Like its sister fortresses scattered across the island, the fort at Prasses was erected during the late 19th century as part of the Ottoman military strategy to control key transportation corridors and suppress local resistance. From this elevated vantage point, the garrison monitored the crucial inland pass connecting the northern coast of Rethymno with the southern valleys.

Atmosphere & Condition:
Today, the fortress stands in a heavily ruined state, with dense wild vegetation and overgrown flora gradually reclaiming the stone masonry walls. While the structural decay and thick germination make physically reaching and walking through the site somewhat challenging, the reward for making the short trek is an extraordinary, unobstructed panorama across the surrounding countryside.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Located off the main road just beyond Prasses village. Though the fort sits close to the road, the lack of a clear, maintained path means navigating a short but steep, overgrown scramble up the hillside to reach the ruins. High-top boots and long trousers are recommended if you plan to ascend.
