Kommos Beach
Stretching along the sweeping bay of Messara on Crete's south coast, Kommos Beach is an expansive, wide sandy shore located between the coastal town of Matala and the coastal plain of Tymbaki.

Minoan History & Archaeological Site:
In antiquity, Kommos served as the vital, active port town for the major Minoan palace of Phaistos, located just a few kilometers inland. Archaeological excavations along the southern edge of the beach have uncovered the impressive stone remains of ancient Minoan harbor installations, civic buildings, massive ship sheds, and a Greek sanctuary complex dating from the Post-palatial down to the Hellenistic periods.

The Environment & Sea Turtles:
Beyond its rich historical roots, Kommos is celebrated for its pristine natural beauty, backed by rolling sand dunes and tamarisks. The quiet, undeveloped northern stretch of the beach serves as an officially protected nesting ground for the endangered Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), where nests are carefully monitored and marked during the summer months.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Access is seamless via paved asphalt roads leading southwest from Pitsidia or Tymbaki. There is ample parking available near the shoreline near the southern end (close to the archaeological ruins and tavernas), with easy foot access along the entire length of the beach.
