Nida Plateau
Situated approximately 22 kilometers south of the mountain village of Anogeia, the Nida Plateau sits nestled at an impressive altitude of around 1,400 meters between the eastern and western peaks of the majestic Mount Ida (Psiloritis) range.

The Landscape & Shepherding Culture:
This expansive, high-altitude polje is surrounded by rugged limestone peaks and serves as a classic hub for traditional Cretan livestock grazing. Across the plateau, visitors will spot unique stone shepherd huts known as mitata (vaulted dry-stone shelters built entirely without mortar), which have been used by local shepherds for generations for shelter and artisanal cheese-making.

The Ancient Mythology:
The plateau is internationally renowned for its proximity to Ideon Andron (the Cave of Zeus), located right on the mountainside overlooking the plain. According to ancient Greek mythology, this vast cavern was where the infant Zeus was hidden and raised by the nymph Amaltheia and guarded by the Kouretes to protect him from his father, Kronos.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Easily reached via a smooth, well-paved mountain asphalt road ascending from Anogeia. The road features wide hairpin curves and sweeping views before dropping down onto the flat floor of the plateau. It serves as the primary base for hikers aiming to summit Psiloritis Peak (2,456m) or those continuing up the paved switchbacks to the Skinakas Observatory.
