Kalami
Nestled in the foothills of the Viannos region in the southeastern Heraklion prefecture, Kalami is one of the most fascinating ghost villages in Crete, offering an atmospheric glimpse into 20th-century Cretan rural life.

The History & Abandonment:
Unlike many ghost towns that were desert places built in high, inaccessible mountain terrain, Kalami is positioned just one kilometer off the main road and a mere ten kilometers from the coast. Despite its accessible location, a steady decline began in the early 1970s. As coastal agriculture flourished and urban centers expanded, the younger generation migrated away to nearby coastal settlements or larger cities, leaving behind a frozen-in-time village where time seemingly stood still.

The Atmosphere & Architecture:
Wandering through the quiet stone alleyways reveals dozens of well-preserved stone houses with open doorways, old wooden shutters, traditional fireplaces, and personal items left behind by former residents. The village center still features the quiet square (platía), traditional stone arches, and old neighborhood churches, framed by lush surrounding olive groves and dramatic mountain scenery.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: Reaching Kalami is very straightforward. A short, asphalt-paved side road branches off the primary road connecting Ano Viannos with the coastal villages of Psari Forada and Keratokambos. You can park near the entrance of the village and explore the narrow stone footpaths safely on foot.
