West Crete

Skinaria beach
Tucked away on the rugged southern coastline of the Rethymno region, this small, spectacular cove is widely celebrated as one of the finest beaches on the entire island of Crete, offering an pristine and intimate alternative to the larger coastal strips.

The Landscape:
Located approximately 3 kilometers southwest of Lefkogia village, the beach is characterized by its fine, smooth pebbles and dramatic rocky flanks. The hallmark of Skinaria is its astonishingly crystal-clear, turquoise water. The seafloor drops away steeply, meaning the water becomes quite deep almost immediately as you step into the surf, making it a paradise for strong swimmers.

The Undersea World:
Because of its exceptional underwater clarity and vibrant marine life, Skinaria is a legendary hotspot for scuba divers and snorkelers. Adding to the mystique of the bay, the remnants of a broken wooden boat wreck lie resting on the seabed at the northern side of the cove, serving as a fascinating underwater landmark that keeps local diving schools returning daily.

Rider’s/Explorer's Notes:
The Access: The beach is easily accessible via a narrow but fully paved asphalt road twisting down from the main village of Lefkogia. The drive down offers beautiful views of the rugged coastal hills, though you should watch for tight corners and the occasional patch of blown sand as you approach the beach parking area.
